As an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Prairie View A&M University and the Executive Director of the Greater Northside Chamber of Commerce, she has left an indelible mark on both academia and the business world.

At the core of Dr. Atkins’ pursuits is her commitment to understanding and addressing the challenges faced by marginalized communities, particularly Black women. As a 2023 cohort member of the prestigious Goldman Sachs & Urban Institutes: One Million Black Women Research program, her research delves into crucial societal issues. Her research summary for OMBW eloquently highlights her focus on the historic and contemporary experiences of Black women in corporate America. With a keen eye on the “Great Resignation” phenomenon, she examines how discriminatory practices, including racial, gender, and wage discrimination, have driven Black women to embark on the path of entrepreneurship.

Dr. Atkins’ academic journey culminated in the attainment of her Ph.D. in racial & ethnic relations and organizational theory from Texas A&M University in 2020. Her research focuses on assisting marginalized small business owners—with specific attention to Black entrepreneurs—in the development of sustainable businesses regardless of the industry type through the development of a multidisciplinary framework that examines the entrepreneurial strategies utilized to navigate barriers in the market. Her educational background further includes an MBA from Texas Women’s University and a BA from Prairie View A&M University, grounding her in a diverse array of disciplines.

Dr. Atkins’ involvement extends beyond her academic and professional roles. Since 2008, she has collaborated with a myriad of organizations, including the Pearland Innovation Hub, Broham Fine Soul Food & Groceries, Feed the Soul Foundation, Women’s Inflection Point, Houston Minority Supplier Diversity Council, National Black MBA Association, the Greater Houston Black Chamber, and various small businesses throughout Texas.
